Pancakes, Swim, Airport

This morning, we met up with Andrea, Eva, and Theo at Vios Cafe in Ravenna. I haven't been to this location, yet. Aside from the super long wait for our table, it's quite cool. And, in their defense, they did the best they could to get us seated, but that's how it goes in restaurants sometimes.

Vincent ate a full plate of kids pancakes. He finished before all of us. That's 3, about 5-inches diameter flap jacks. Then, he ate some of my potatoes, and some of my scrambled eggs. He asked for more food, so I ordered him another plate of pancakes, and asked them to box 2 of them up. Drats! We left our box at the restaurant! When we were all done eating, we went to the attached book store for a bit before heading out. I really like their selection of children's books.

After brunch, I convinced Vincent to take a private swim lesson before his regular swim class. He's been having a tough time doing anything but a "doggie paddle" in class. I wanted for him to have a little one-on-one time. All-in-all, he did well. He ended up in the pool for an hour, which is quite long, when you are working so hard, rather than just splashing and playing. I was very proud of his endurance and effort. He's still not a swimmer, but I think if we spend a good amount of time at pools this summer, he'll be there, soon. Maybe.

This evening, we picked up David and Jon at the airport. Jon had joined David down in L.A. to visit Tom, Gabe, and Sarah. Did I mention that? It's David's 35th birthday today. As his gift, I sent him to L.A. He had to take a trip to San Francisco for work (one more before 'Penguin' arrives), so he combined the two trips.

I took the boys to McDonald's near the airport, figuring they could eat and play while we waited for David's flight. I also had Vincent bring along his homework to finish up. I MUST remember that this idea is better in my head than in reality. That place was a mad house. The kids were all so crazy. Even Vincent was a bit amazed by the madness. He did, however, get his homework done rather well, so I guess that's positive.

The kids were so happy to see both Daddy and Jon. They talked a ton during the car ride home. It was quite funny and sweet.

Happy 35th Birthday, David! Happy Chinese New Year!

Borderline, But, Okay

I don't qualify as having gestational diabetes. What a relief. The only thing is that I did have one test come back above the normal range, but just barely. Since I already eat a pretty balanced diet, my doctor wants me to exercise more. Lots more. Like 3-4 times a week. That's going to be challenging, seeing that I can barely get in the gym 1-2 times a week these days. I guess I'll figure it out. I have a few options, like the indoor pool in Greenlake. And, I think, in general, I was getting a little lazing in my eating, and going for "white" stuff, instead of whole grains, a bit more. I've also had a major sweet tooth.

Tasted Awful

I took my 3 hour glucose tolerance test this morning. Unfortunately, once you factor in waiting to be called by the lab (which they were only a couple minutes behind), getting the first blood draw, then drinking the sugary orange liquid, and the time it takes to make each subsequent blood draw (3 more, for a grand total of 4), I was there for like 4 hours. And, I had been fasting since 9pm the previous night. It was past 1pm when I left the clinic. I was queasy and famished. Luckily, I didn't pass out.

And, now we wait for results...

Ai Yai Yai

Let's recap our health since the new year:
Tyler had a fever
The boys had lice
Vincent had a stomach bug
...and today, I found out that my glucose screening came back with a higher than normal result. *Sigh*

What does that mean? It means that next week I will need to fast, then get a blood draw, then drink this awful drink, wait an hour, get a blood draw, wait another hour, get another blood draw, and wait one more hour, ending with another blood draw. Is that right? Four blood draws in 3 hours? Something like that. Fun, huh?

If this test will tell me if I have gestational diabetes. And, if I do, well, I think it involves checking my blood sugar 4 times a day until baby is born. Even more fun.

On the flip side, Vincent did go back to school today. He made it through the full day and was in a great mood when he got home. He's back to himself. I did not have him go to his after school enrichment class, nor will he attend the mid-day birthday party tomorrow (school gets out 2 hours early tomorrow). I'm still playing it safe, but mostly want him to build his strength and body mass back up.

Tyler was in another sad mood this morning. He woke up saying that I told him he could have cookie dough for breakfast. Apparently, it was a dream. He continued to act sad, and when I asked him why on our way out to school, he said, "Because of dough..." Oh bother.

The Poop Scoop & PJ's for Tyler

Vincent woke up once in the middle of the night to visit the bathroom. Tyler woke, too, with a wet bed. I believe there was one more wake up from Tyler later, too. It's a bit fuzzy now.

In the morning, Vincent got up around 7:15 to use the toilet, again. Aside from that, he's been doing pretty well.

I kept Vincent home from school one more day. He went with us to Ty's gymnastics class. After class, he asked for a snack. I forgot to pack one, so I offered to take them to Starbucks. He ate half a butter croissant, and drank a box of apple juice. He was in a good mood.
When we got home, he went straight to our room and back into bed. Tyler and I worked on writing the alphabet and sounding out letters. Vincent got up by the time we made it to "W". He had some red bumps around his eyes. Great. Luckily, it cleared up with a lite hydrocortisone cream.

Vincent ate a decent lunch. Not tons of food, but variety: a couple bites of cheese pizza, quarter cup of applesauce, and potato chips. His mood stayed good.

Tyler and I took a nap, and Vincent played on the iPad. By 3:30pm, he seemed like a new person. Or, more like himself, again. We worked on his home work, took a walk to the store with Tyler, and the boys are back to playing together like normal. The boys even helped me bake cookies.

Fingers crossed for a healthy child. He went to sleep in his own bed tonight.

Ooh, and I meant to say that Tyler spent his whole day in pajamas. He woke up this morning, and was quickly devastated with the knowledge that Vincent and Daddy had already put the Amazon Fresh order away. This is one of his favorite activities. He immediately turned around and went back to bed, with full tears. I went in to comfort him, and the only thing I could think of was to offer letting him wear pajamas to gymnastics class. That totally did it. He did have to change his shirt to match his pants, but he felt so proud.
And, from what I can see, Tyler seems to be doing well in gymnastics. He's no Olympian, or even a gymnast, but it seems to be a positive activity for him.

Still Going, But We Have A Super Trooper

We are on day 4 of stomach flu for Vincent. This totally blows. He can barely eat, so his already skinny body is even skinnier.

He is, however, seemingly getting better. His fever broke & has not gone back up all day. He only took one short nap, instead of several throughout the day. He got up and played a little. Very little. He also wanted to go to the backyard with David and Tyler before dinner. I told him he could if he promised to do exactly as I said, which involved lots of bundling up. While outside, he barked a bunch of orders as them, playing 'Simon Says.' He even gave us a whole lot of attitude.

What he hasn't been doing is eating much. Yes, yes, we get that he's not feeling well, and, sadly, everything he eats goes right through him. The problem is he refuses to eat the better stuff we offer him and will eat a little of the not as good stuff. He had a frozen fruit pop (for hydrating) and French fries (carbs). He barely touched the fresh apples I peeled and sliced for him. I won't drink the Pedialyte. Dinner for him was plain orzo, which he made a big fuss about eating. *Sigh*

And, so he continues to run to the toilet, and worry us. David went out to get some probiotic tablets to tell him it's "medicine." He drank half the glass. Hopefully, it'll help him build some good bacteria, and things will slow down for him. At least, he's able to control himself now and reduce accidents. Whew!

No Superbowl party for us tomorrow.

As for our 'super trooper,' it's Tyler. Aside from being loud and full of silly energy (both good, normal behavior), he has been a total trooper. He plays on his own, he is agreeable to being cooped up in the house, and he's giggly and happy. He had his moments here and there, but for the most part, he has been pleasant. Thank goodness!!
