Cold Turkey

Yesterday, I noticed that Crosby's "wubbanub" was becoming cracked from wear and tear. This is his pacifier. It is attached to the mouth of a small stuffed giraffe. He continued to suck on throughout the day after I discovered this, but I was feeling pretty uncomfortable about it. I mean, he practically chews on it, now that he's so big and has all those teeth. And, he's teething, again, so he's really going to town.

As a result, we decided that yesterday was the night we would ween Crosby from his pacifier. Cold turkey. I showed it to David, then, we told Crosby that it's broken now, and we need to throw it away. So, we cut the pacifier off the giraffe's mouth, and tossed it in the garbage in front of it. Yikes! It sounds so cruel, and I felt so cruel. But, we figured we would take that route first, and see what happens. We still have a couple of pacifiers hidden away, so those were our backup.

He snuggled up to the giraffe while we read books afterward, but then was very upset when it came time to get into bed. He cried for about 30 minutes, with us going in to comfort him every 5 minutes.

Today, at nap time, he rejected the giraffe when I gave it to him to snuggle. I gave him extra hugs and kisses, and rocked him a little longer before putting him down. He was a little upset, but eventually fell asleep.

Tonight, at bed time, he asked for the giraffe. When I gave it to him, he snuggled it up to his chest. THANK GOODNESS! We read books together with his giraffe, and he went right to bed with no fuss. Whew!
